Media reports Milie ready to skip Zelensky`s peace conference

(MENAFN) Argentinian President Javier Milei has emerged as the latest foreign leader to decline participation in the upcoming 'Ukraine peace summit' in Switzerland, reportedly choosing to prioritize national holidays and ongoing domestic negotiations over attending the international gathering.

According to reports from Bloomberg and La Nacion on Thursday, Milei has decided to abbreviate his initially planned ten-day European trip into two segments, with a return to Argentina scheduled for June 15-22. This change in itinerary will lead to Milei's absence from the Kiev-sponsored event slated for June 15-16 at the Burgenstock Resort in Switzerland, as well as most activities of the G7 summit in Italy.

Bloomberg suggested that Milei's decision may have been influenced by ongoing discussions surrounding his contentious domestic reform agenda, while La Nacion indicated that the president was reluctant to forgo his first Flag Day celebration in office, along with another significant national holiday.

The Swiss-hosted peace conference, heralded by Kiev and its Western allies as a crucial step towards resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict, has faced criticism from Moscow, which views its exclusion as a deliberate attempt to sideline Russian interests. Describing the conference as a "scam," Moscow alleges that it seeks to manipulate neutral nations into backing Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's government.

Despite extending invitations to approximately 160 states, Kiev has encountered challenges in garnering support from nations in the Global South. Notably, China, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia have already announced their non-participation, while India is reportedly contemplating sending a limited delegation. Similarly, Pakistan is anticipated to abstain from the meeting to maintain its stance of "neutrality" in the conflict.
