US congressman opposes legislation targeting International Criminal Court

(MENAFN) US Congressman Jason Crow voiced his opposition on Monday to proposed legislation aimed at imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), denouncing the bill as detrimental to American interests and global leadership.

In a statement before the House Rules Committee, Crow criticized the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, arguing that it would undermine national security and erode America's standing in the international community. He emphasized the need for a more nuanced approach to addressing concerns related to the ICC, rather than resorting to punitive measures.

Despite expressing concerns about the ICC's handling of certain cases, particularly regarding Israeli leaders, Crow emphasized his longstanding support for Israel's security. He underscored the importance of upholding values and promoting rules-based institutions, asserting that American leadership is most effective when aligned with these principles.

Following the ICC's recommendation of war crimes charges against Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, some Republican lawmakers have called for sanctions against the Court. However, Crow's dissent highlights divisions within Congress regarding the appropriate response to the ICC's actions.

The House Rules Committee voted 9-3 to advance the legislation, indicating strong support for the bill among lawmakers. It is anticipated that the House will pass the bill later in the week, after which it will proceed to the Senate for further consideration.

As debate continues over the proposed sanctions on the ICC, Crow's stance underscores broader questions about the role of the United States in international institutions and its approach to promoting accountability and justice on the global stage.
