Danish minister calls for Telegram ban amid concerns of abuse

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Danish Equality Minister Trine Bramsen Peter Rahbek Juel advocated for a ban on the messaging app Telegram within the country, citing concerns over the frequent targeting of women with Middle Eastern backgrounds for abuse on the platform. In an interview with Berlingske newspaper, Bramsen, representing the Social Democrats in the coalition government, expressed alarm over instances of "shaming" directed towards young ethnic individuals, particularly women, on Telegram.

The minister highlighted the potential consequences of such abuse, including social exclusion and even more severe repercussions within families. She emphasized the urgent need to address the misuse of social media platforms like Telegram, noting that these actions pose a threat to the safety and well-being of young people.

Telegram, which originated in Russia in 2013, has increasingly become a focal point for discussions surrounding online abuse and harassment. Bramsen acknowledged the challenges associated with implementing a ban on Telegram, recognizing that it may require coordination at the European Union (EU) level. However, she emphasized the importance of taking immediate action within Denmark to protect vulnerable individuals from harm.

While acknowledging the complexities involved in regulating online platforms, Bramsen emphasized the need for legislative measures to address illegal content and ensure the safety of users. She stressed the role of the courts in enforcing regulations and expressed determination to enact appropriate laws to safeguard individuals from online threats.

Bramsen's call for a Telegram ban reflects growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms to perpetrate abuse and harassment. As policymakers grapple with the challenges posed by online platforms, efforts to enact effective legislation and enforcement mechanisms remain crucial in addressing these issues and promoting a safer online environment.
