China announces decision not to participate in Zelensky`s peace summit

(MENAFN) The Chinese government has announced its decision not to participate in an upcoming peace summit on the Ukraine conflict, set to be hosted by Switzerland. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, the necessary conditions for China's involvement have not been met. During a media briefing, Mao emphasized that for any summit aimed at resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to be effective, it must adhere to three key elements: recognition by both Moscow and Kiev, equal participation from all parties, and a fair consideration of all peace proposals.

Mao explained that none of these conditions are likely to be satisfied at the conference scheduled for June 15 and 16 at the Burgenstock Resort near Lucerne, making it "problematic" for China to take part. She stressed, however, that China’s absence should not be interpreted as a lack of support for peace between Russia and Ukraine. Mao also suggested that some countries attending the conference may not be genuinely interested in ending the conflict.

Reiterating China’s consistent stance, Mao stated that Beijing has never "fanned fire or fueled the flames" in the Ukraine hostilities and expressed hope that all parties would understand China’s position on the summit.

In response, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky criticized Beijing for its reluctance to attend the Swiss conference, accusing China of becoming "an instrument in the hands of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin" and attempting to undermine the event's credibility. Despite this tension, China remains firm in its decision, highlighting the importance of meeting the stipulated conditions for any meaningful peace dialogue.
