First EU Special Representative For The Gulf Starts Office


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, June 2 (KUNA) -- The new EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the Gulf Luigi Di Maio took up office and started work yesterday, an EU spokesperson confirmed on Friday.
"I can confirm that the new EU Special Representative for the Gulf Luigi DI Maio took up office yesterday and physically he started work on the agenda with which he was tasked," EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy Peter Stano told a news conference in Brussels replying to a question by Kuwait News Agency, KUNA.
"His mandate is linked to the EU strategy for the Gulf. That means engaging with partners both within the EU and the Gulf in order to bring our relationship to new level to deepen our strategic cooperation to do everything in order to support what the EU, High Representative (Josep Borell ) are doing in order to reinforce the notion of strategic partnership between the EU and the Gulf states," he stated..
"There are many challenges that we need to tackle jointly. It is very good that the EUSR started his activities to be able to contribute in these efforts," added Stano.
On May 15, the EU appointed former Italian foreign minister Luigi Di Maio as the 27-member bloc's special envoy to the Gulf. Di Maio has an initial mandate of 21 months. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy from 2019 to 2022. (end)
