Over 9 Million People In The EU Worked As ICT Specialists In 2022

BRUSSELS, 25th May, 2023 (WAM) -- In 2022, 9.4 million people in the EU worked as ICT specialists, representing 4.6 percent of the total EU workforce, according to figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. The share of ICT specialists in the EU has been increasing over the last decade, rising by 1.4 percentage points (pp) since 2012.

Among the EU countries, the share of ICT specialists was highest in Sweden (8.6 percent), followed by Luxembourg (7.7 percent) and Finland (7.6 percent). The lowest shares were observed in Greece (2.5 percent), Romania (2.8 percent) and Poland (3.6 percent).

From 2012 to 2022, the number of ICT specialists in the EU surged by 57.8 percent, which is nearly 6.6 times the growth rate for employment (+8.8 percent).

The share of women working as ICT specialists experienced a marginal decline in 2022 compared with 2021 (18.9 percent compared with 19.1 percent), breaking the upward trend observed since 2014.

Among the EU countries, the highest shares of women among employed ICT specialists were observed in Bulgaria (28.9 percent), Romania (25.2 percent) and Estonia (24.5 percent), while the smallest shares were observed in Czechia (10.9 percent) and Hungary (13.6 percent).
