Ukraine Protests Restrictions on Agricultural Exports to EU

(MENAFN) The Ukrainian authorities have expressed their displeasure with the restrictions imposed on their country's agricultural exports to the European Union by sending notes of protest to the Polish and European Union embassies in Kiev. The move was made known by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Oleg Nikolenko, in a Facebook post on Saturday. Nikolenko emphasized that Ukraine finds the restrictions on its agricultural products to be "utterly unacceptable" and that they contravene the Ukraine- European Union Association Agreement, as well as the principles and norms of the European Union Single Market.

Earlier this month, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria decided to ban the importation of agricultural products from Ukraine without any prior consultation with the Ukrainian authorities. This action was taken to protect their domestic markets, which had been inundated with cheap Ukrainian produce. Romania did not impose a similar ban, but it joined the calls for Brussels to stop Ukrainian goods from entering the region.

Nikolenko further explained that Kiev has "all legal grounds" to immediately resume its exports to Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Bulgaria while ensuring the uninterrupted transit of Ukrainian products to other countries both within and outside the European Union. He urged the European Union to find a balanced solution to the issue based on European Union legislation, the Association Agreement, and in the spirit of solidarity.

In summary, the Ukrainian authorities have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ban on their agricultural products by some European Union countries and are calling for a resolution that is in line with the Ukraine- European Union Association Agreement and the principles of the European Union Single Market. They have urged the European Union to act in the spirit of solidarity and find a balanced solution to the issue.
