Türkiye's Istanbul Airports Experience Significant Increase in Passenger Traffic in Q1 2023


(MENAFN) According to data compiled by Anadolu from the Directorate General of State Airports Authority, the number of passengers who traveled through Istanbul's two busiest airports, Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gokcen Airport, increased by 38 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2023. In total, 24.5 million passengers traveled through these airports between January and March.

Istanbul Airport accounted for the majority of this traffic, with a total of 16.5 million passengers passing through its gates. Of these passengers, 3.6 million traveled on domestic routes, while 12.9 million traveled internationally. Istanbul Airport also served a total of 113,845 flights during this period.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport, located on Istanbul's Anatolian side, was the second-busiest airport in Türkiye during the first quarter of 2023, attracting 7.9 million passengers. Of these passengers, 3.7 million traveled domestically, while 4.2 million traveled internationally.

Overall, Türkiye's airports experienced a significant increase in passenger traffic during the first quarter of 2023, with over 38.9 million passengers, including transit passengers, traveling through them. This marks a rise of 31.5 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. The increase in passenger traffic is an encouraging sign for the country's aviation industry, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
