Kuwait News Launches First AI-Powered News Presenter

(MENAFN) Kuwait News, an affiliate of Kuwait Times, has recently launched its first-ever news presenter in the form of a female virtual anchor created using artificial intelligence. The AI-generated news anchor, named Fedha, made her first appearance on the Twitter account of Kuwait News on Saturday, introducing herself in Arabic.

Fedha is designed to look like a woman with blonde hair and brown eyes, wearing a black blazer and a white top. She aims to explore innovative ways to deliver news content and gather audience opinions, as she asked in her debut, "What kind of news do you prefer? Let us hear your opinions."

Abdullah Boftain, deputy editor-in-chief for Kuwait News, told AFP news agency that Fedha may be further developed with a Kuwaiti accent and may read online news bulletins in the future. He added that the introduction of Fedha is part of the company's initiative to explore the potential of AI in offering new and innovative content.

The emergence of AI-powered news presenters is not new. In fact, last 2022, virtual human startup Hour One introduced a new tool to create synthetic news reports with AI anchors from a text script, generating three-dimensional videos with the setting and virtual news anchors chosen from a catalog or created by the user from their own recordings 1. China's Xinhua news agency also unveiled an AI news presenter in 2018, which synthesized the presenters' voices, lip movements, and expressions based on those of real Xinhua presenters 2.

The creation of virtual news anchors is made possible through the use of text-to-speech technology, which converts a text script into speech 3. The character then begins speaking the lines, and if the audio is recorded separately, it may need to be synchronized with the virtual news anchor's lip movements.

In conclusion, the introduction of Fedha, the first AI-powered news presenter in Kuwait, marks another milestone in the integration of AI technology in the news industry. As AI technology continues to advance, it is expected to redefine the way news is delivered and consumed, creating new opportunities for innovation and growth.
