UAE To Participate In 145Th IPU Assembly In Rwanda

KIGALI, 6th October 2022 (WAM ) – The federal National Council (FNC) will participate in the and its related meetings and in the 210th Session of the IPU Governing Council, which will be held in Kigali from 8 to 15 October.

Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Head of the FNC Parliamentary Division at the IPU, will lead the UAE delegation to the eight-day meetings.

More than 1200 delegates, including some 60 speakers and deputy speakers are expected to attend in person.

The Assembly will consider what parliamentary action to take on international migration and how to stop human-trafficking and human rights abuses, including those that are state-sponsored.

Other issues under consideration include environmental degradation and its effects on the proliferation of terrorism; the impact of war and atrocity on civilian populations; war and climate change as triggers of global food insecurity; and the situation of the human rights of parliamentarians.

All IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs, will convene during this Assembly. The will focus on the overall theme of Gender equality and gender-sensitive parliaments as drivers of change for a more resilient and peaceful world -and provide a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views and galvanize parliamentary action in this area.

The Assembly will adopt resolutions on the emergency item and on the subject item taken up by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights entitled Parliamentary impetus to local and regional development of countries with high levels of international migration and to stopping all forms, including state-sponsored, of human-trafficking and human rights abuses. The Governing Council will examine and adopt a number of decisions, including on cases of violation of the human rights of parliamentarians. The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on the overall theme of the General Debate.

Some 120 parliaments, including high-level delegations from both the Russian Federation and Ukraine, are expected to attend. The IPU Task Force for the peaceful resolution of the crisis in Ukraine will meet to follow up on its initial mission to Kyiv and Moscow. The Task Force will report to the full membership on the outcome of its mission and the steps ahead. The objective of the Task Force , led by MP Dr. Ali Al Nuaimi of the United Arab Emirates and composed of , is to explore possible parliamentary solutions to contribute to an end to the crisis in Ukraine. Its efforts aim to complement ongoing peace efforts at the governmental and UN level.
