Iran demands strong stance on Israel nuclear actions

(MENAFN) Iran's envoy and permanent representative to the United Nations has stressed the importance for a vital position of the nations in the 10th NPT review conference to Israel based on the resolves of the earlier sessions.

Majid Takht Ravanchi stressed Israel’s possession of nuclear arms in the region and asked for its denuclearization.

He commented in a meeting with Iranian journalists in New York on Friday.

“The issue of a Middle East free of nuclear weapons is one of the most important issues for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he informed the journalists, as reported by Iran’s state news outlet IRNA. “The issue of the Middle East as a region free of nuclear weapons is one of the important debates that all the countries of this region are suffering from, because the Zionist regime, as the only regime possessing hundreds of nuclear warheads, is not ready to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). And it does not put its nuclear facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.”

Takht Ravanchi underlined, “Not only does the Zionist regime not carry out this action, but some countries cooperate with this regime and it is always supported by these countries during the NPT conference and outside it.”

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations went on to say, “This issue is one of the important issues for the Islamic Republic of Iran. During the 10th NPT Review Conference, we have had a constructive approach in this field and we have announced that the documents that were presented during the previous NPT Review Conferences in 1995, 2000 and 2010 and clearly stated that the Zionist regime should to join the treaty should be discussed and expressed in the text of the final statement of this conference (tenth conference).”

Takht Ravanchi added “If this issue is not stated in the text of the final statement of this conference, it shows that there is no preparation for the 10th NPT review conference to pass its resolutions by consensus.”

Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations stressed, “In the negotiations, we have said very clearly that we are not ready to back down. This means that this conference should take a position on the Middle East debate that is behind the previous conferences.”

He continued, “We have stated that this issue is one of the red lines of the Islamic Republic of Iran. If they want to deal honestly and constructively, the language that was used in the statements of the previous conferences should also be used in this conference in order to move towards a Middle East without nuclear weapons.”

Takht Ravanchi also claimed, “We are trying to reach a consensus, but we will not do it at any cost; We have a framework and principles, and actions must be taken to reach a consensus. If our red lines are respected, we will definitely welcome to reach a consensus, otherwise we will not reach a consensus.”
