Rebels in Tigray accuse Ethiopian army of significant onslaught

(MENAFN) Tigray rebels stated that on Wednesday, a "large-scale offensive " was launched against southern Tigray by Ethiopian government soldiers and affiliated militias.

The Ethiopian government did not respond right away, and because of a communications blackout in the area, it was unable to independently verify the accusations made by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

Getachew Reda, a TPLF spokesman, claimed in a short message sent from Nairobi, “they launched the offensive early this morning around 5:00 am local time (0200 GMT). We are defending our positions.”

He also mentioned on Twitter that the Ethiopian army, special forces, and militias from the nearby Amhara area started the "large-scale" onslaught "against our positions in the southern front." The TPLF's allegations come five months after a cease-fire was announced in the deadly fighting that broke out in northern Ethiopia in November 2020.

The Ethiopian National Defense Force accused the TPLF of trying to "defame" the army by alleging that government soldiers were approaching their positions or bombarding them with heavy weaponry in a declaration released on Tuesday.
