Zarqa, Jan 24 (Petra) –– Deputizing for His Majesty King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh Monday opened a Universal Group Company (UGC) paints factory in Zarqa Governorate, giving the green light for the full operation of the plant, which was built in 2020.
In remarks at the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister reiterated his government's support of national industries, which, he said, translate the private sector's contribution to the sustainable development process and creation of job opportunities for Jordanians.
He said the government endeavours to develop the investment environment in the Kingdom, boost local businesses and attract more Arab and foreign capital, referring to the new electricity tariff, which will reduce cost on a number of vital economic sectors, including health, tourism, agriculture, trade and industry, with the aim of raising their competitiveness and spurring growth.
Khasawneh expressed his pride in the national industry, whose quality products can compete in foreign markets.
The Prime Minister took a first-hand look at the production lines, and was briefed by CEO Shadi Anabtawi on the quality paints of the factory, a byproduct of 100 years of expertise by Jotun, the global Norwegian chemicals firm Jotun.
Anabtawi pointed out that the factory uses modern systems and can compete at the regional level through Jordanian manpower, noting the quest to reduce transport and storage costs that reflect on sales and training of local staff to keep pace with global developments in the paint industry.
Jotun President/CEO Morten Fon said he is proud to establish his company's first factory in Jordan, which will help support local industries, stressing the solid and strategic relations between Jordan and Norway.
The paints factory produces up to 15 million litres annually, and the capacity will reach 35 million litres by 2024.
The factory specializes in the production and distribution of quality water-based paints that meet parent company (Jotun-IS) standards and rely on up-to-date technical manufacture and automation specifications with Jordanian labour and expertise.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yousef Shamali, Minister of Investment Khairy Amr, Minister of Labor Nayef Istitieh, Norwegian Ambassador Espen Lindback and local officials.
