Doha: Qatar University's (QU) Arabic Language Department marks World Arabic Language which also coincides with the Qatar National Day yesterday.

Arabic Language Assistant Professor, Dr. Haya Al Derhim said:“Arabic is the first world language. It is the Qur'an's language which includes knowledge, revelation, stories, laws, and lessons that no human being can understand until he knows Arabic language. From here comes the first and most possible evidence of its universality.”

For his part, Arabic Language Lecturer, Dr. Rami Abu Shehab stressed: “Language reflects the true meaning of civilisation, and the values behind it. Language bears the shadows of human: dreams, anxieties and their fears, as well as their accomplishments, and anything outside of language would not exist.”

Meanwhile, Arabic Language Professor Abdelhamid Zahid said that the time has come for the Arab community to look at its language with optimism.

“This optimism depends on creating the horizon of hope that emerges from our universities. It is a symbol of renewal and construction of the structure of the civilisational glory of this language,” he disclosed.

World Arabic Language Day is celebrated annually on December 19 since 2012.

The date coincides with the day in 1973 that the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of Unesco.

This year's theme“Arabic Language, a bridge between civilisations” is a call to reaffirm the important role of the Arabic language in connecting people through culture, science, literature and many more domains.

It also highlights the historic role of Arabic in creating and transmitting knowledge, as well as in enhancing dialogue and building peace.

For centuries Arabic was the common ground, the connector, that reflected the richness of human existence and provided access to numerous resources.

In increasingly globalised, digitalised and multilingual societies, the 2021 theme is of urgent relevance.

It recognises the changing world and the imperative to reinforce dialogue between nations and peoples.
