A committee is to be appointed to investigate the violation of health guidelines at events organised by the Municipal Council in Nuwara Eliya.

The events were held as part of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivities.

Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage told Colombo Gazette that the events were found to have violated quarantine regulations.

He said the provincial Commissioner of Local government has been instructed to conduct a probe into the events.

The Central Province Governor said the Commissioner will appoint a committee to conduct the investigation.

The New Year festival events were organized by the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council.

Governor Gamage said the events had violated the health guidelines and his instructions issued in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

Allegations had also been raised that Municipal Council employees at the festival had been served 175ml bottles of liquor with their lunch.

A number of events went ahead in Nuwara Eliya yesterday including the carnival near Lake Gregory.

While most people were seen wearing face masks at the events, social distancing was not maintained.

The events were held at a time when the Government had banned public gatherings, parties and events due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka.

The Health Ministry had also issued a new set of guidelines to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

Head of the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 and Army Commander General Shavendra Silva had on Friday (23) called on the organizers of events scheduled for the long weekend to suspend such events due to the pandemic. (Colombo Gazette)
