São Paulo – Mauritania recently received the third instalment in an urgent financial grant from the Islamic Solidarity Fund (ISF), an arm of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The grant is designed to help the country address problems caused by the novel coronavirus.
The ISF has approved grants to 21 member states. The OIC said in a press release that the grant was handed over to the delegates of the permanent missions of Yemen, Chad, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Sudan, Comoros, and Maldives, at the headquarters of the OIC General Secretariat on Thursday (25). OIC secretary-general Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen was in attendance.
The meeting (pictured above) took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. So far, 17 member states got ISF support to fight Covid-19. The ISF's efforts are part of a commitment from Islamic financial institutions to help out countries affected by the pandemic. The Islamic Development Bank Group (IsDB) funneled USD 2.3 billion into establishing a Strategic Preparedness and Response Center to mitigate the negative effects of Covid-19 at the health, social, and economic levels.
