Filipino actress wins Best New Performer

(MENAFN - Asia Times) A 34-year-old Filipino actress was honored with a top award at the prestigious Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday.

Crisel Consunji was named as Best New Performer at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) for her role as overseas domestic worker Evelyn in the film Still Human, Apple Daily reported. She was also nominated for the Best Actress award.

The HKFA is known as 'Hong Kong's Oscars' and recognizes achievements in filmmaking at an annual ceremony, usually held in April.

Crisel first addressed the audience in Cantonese, saying that it was her honor to be part of the movie which received a positive response from the film-going public.

'It seems to tell the world that in Hong Kong, when we celebrate our diversity, we move forward together,' Crisel said in English.

She then expressed her appreciation of the director Chan Siu-kuen, who was named the best new director for Still Human. She described Chan as a brilliant woman and a voice of woman empowerment, saying, 'and I hope little girls grow up to be like you'.

Anthony Wong Chau-sang, who played a wheelchair-bound man in Still Human, claimed his third best actor award.

Still Human was directed by Chan Siu-kuen and produced by veteran Hong Kong indie filmmaker Fruit Chan. It tells the story of a former nurse who becomes a caregiver in Hong Kong for a paralyzed Hong Kong man called Leung.
