16th GCC U17 Basketball Championship: Bahrain trounces Oman


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Hosts Oman boys were taught a basketball lesson by their much-superior rival Bahrain in their opening match of the 16th GCC U17 Basketball Championship at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) on Monday.

Bahrain hoopsters cruised to a 99-48 win over the hosts. It raced to a 34-19 lead in first quarter and then was 66-27 up at halftime.

There was no respite for Oman as Bahrain extended its dominance to 90-44 in third and seemed to have gone slow in the fourth to score just nine more in the final session.

Earlier, UAE defeated Qatar 74-57 in the event opener. Saudi Arabia is the other team participating in the championship. Kuwait is absent from the event as the Kuwait Olympic Committee is under IOC suspension.

The tournament was inaugurated by Fareed al Zadjali, the Oman Basketball Association in the presence of representatives from the participating nations.

On Tuesday, Oman plays Saudi Arabia while Bahrain takes on UAE.
