World's oldest known Sumatran orangutan dies aged 62

(MENAFN) In a zoo in Australia, the world's oldest known Sumatran orangutan, aged 62, was confirmed dead with 54 descendants left behind.

The "grand old lady" of Perth Zoo called Puan has been euthanized on Monday after suffering age-related complications.

Puan had been at the zoo since 1968, and was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest of her species in 2016.

The zoo confirmed Puan to have left an "incredible legacy" of 11 children and a total of 54 descendants across the US, Europe as well as other place.

Primate supervisor Holly Thompson said "her genetics count for just under 10% of the global zoological population," adding "she did so much for the colony at Perth Zoo and the survival of her species."
