Pakistan- Still no consensus on caretaker PM

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: Another meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on the name of caretaker prime minister ended on Tuesday without any result.

Both the leaders met at the Prime Minister House and discussed different names for the caretaker PM, but differences remained and the issue remains unresolved. Another meeting will be held tomorrow (Wednesday).

Khursheed Shah told media persons after the meeting that he is hopeful that the name will be finalised soon. Sources said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is still calling shots in the ruling PML-N and he is not agreeing on any former judge or bureaucrat as caretaker prime minister. Prime Minister Abbasi has sought time to convince Nawaz Sharif on the proposed names by the PPP.

Sources said the government has proposed the names of former Chief Justices of Pakistan Justice (R) Nasir

Mulk, Justice (R) Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and former State Bank governor Dr Shamshad Akhtar, while the PPP has proposed the names of Jalil Abbas Jilani, former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf and former defence secretary Salim Abbas Jilani for the coveted office.

During the previous meeting on 18 May, Khursheed Shah had claimed that the name of the caretaker prime minister will be announced on 22 May, but that did not happen. The tenure of the sitting government will end on 31 May after which the caretaker government will take over till the general elections.

Khursheed Shah said if the matter is not settled in tomorrow's meeting, then the decision may be taken to a parliamentary committee.

If the committee also failed to finalise a candidate, then the matter will be referred to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which will then have prerogative to choose any one of the six nominated candidates.
