Jewar airport project gets Centre's nod, Noida residents elated

In a bid to take some load off Delhi's IGI airport, Centre gave nod to Jewar airport project yesterday, that will benefit Noida residents vastly.

The bidding for the project will start in August and the airport is expected to start its operation in three years, said Rajiv Nayan Choubey, civil aviation secretary.

Construction of the 12,350-acre airport will be done in four phases.

Jewar airport will be connected to Delhi through two different train lines.

UP government is already mulling a dedicated RRTS corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to the airport.

"We've asked NCRTC (which has begun RRTS work) to examine feasibility of having a separate line from Sarai Kale Khan to Jewar airport," said Prabhat Kumar, chairman, YEIDA, nodal authority for building Jewar airport.

Other plans in place


Three RRTS routes- Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut, Panipat, and Alwar- have already been approved.

Other plans in place to increase connectivity to Jewar are extension of Greater Noida metro till airport site and a connection with Eastern Peripheral Expressway.

Jewar airport to be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 15,000cr will be able to hold 1.2 crore passengers per annum.


Originally conceived when Rajnath Singh was UP CM in 2001

In June last year, the Centre had approved the proposal for the greenfield airport in Jewar, which was originally conceived in Rajnath Singh's regime in 2001. The project was further developed in 2002 under CM Mayawati and got full revival once Yogi Adityanath took over.
