Kuwait- Israeli troops confront Palestinian demo. marking women day

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) RAMALLAH, March 7 (KUNA) -- Israeli troops on Wednesday confronted a peaceful demonstration staged by Palestinian activists celebrating the International Women's Day.

The troops, manning a checkpoint north of Jerusalem, fired tear gas against incoming Palestinians who emerged from the nearby Qalandya camp.

A number of the demonstrators suffered from suffocation due to the tear gas but were given first aid at the scene, medics said.

The protestors brandished the Palestinian flag and placards affirming Arab identity of Jerusalem and rejection of the US decision to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

Fadwa Al-Barghouthi, member of Fatah movement, said in remarks to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the demonstration was carried out to affirm Jerusalem's Arab identity.

"The Palestinian woman has played a major role for maintaining the Palestinian people steadfastness," she added to KUNA. (end) nq.rk
