Microsoft launches email address support for 15 Indian languages

Microsoft has rolled out support for making email addresses in 15 Indian languages.

This means people will now be able to use email addresses in regional languages like Hindi, Bodo, Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Marathi, Nepali, Sindhi, Bengali, Gujarati, Manipuri, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

The service will be available across all Microsoft's email platforms like Outlook, Office 365, Exchange Online, and Exchange Online Protection.

All of the new languages support international encoding standard Unicode. The company also praised the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) for making the internet increasingly multilingual. The feature comes as a part of Microsoft's Email Address Internationalization (EAI).

"Indian languages are under-represented online. Of the 447 languages spoken in India, none make it to the list of top 50 digital languages," Microsoft said.

Claiming that 8% of all internet users are Indian, it added, "We're making technology use the language of people, and not requiring people to first learn the traditional language of technology."

Background


Microsoft had first launched 'Project Bhasha' in 1998 to break the language barrier on the internet and accelerate computing in Indian languages.

Today, its search engine Bing supports internet browsing in nine Indian languages.

The company is also making translation and speech recognition available across several Indian languages through artificial intelligence (AI) and deep neural networks.
