Days after Florida, 7th grader in Ohio school shoots himself

Days after the Florida high school massacre, a Grade 7 student of Jackson Middle School, Ohio, seemed to have shot himself with a gun in a washroom.

Police suspect he brought the weapon in himself, but whether the shot was accidental or intentional isn't known yet.

All others are safe, authorities said, though there was a brief lockdown.

Parents were seen waiting outside anxiously.

Jackson Township Sheriff Mark Brink said the student seemed to have snuck in a "distractionary device," describing it as a .22-caliber rifle. Immediately after the incident, he was rushed to a hospital, but his present condition isn't known.

Nervous students, particularly tense in the aftermath of the Florida shooting, sent messages to their loved ones while in lockdown.

"Come get me in, like, an hour. Just in case, if I go, tell everyone I love them," wrote one to his mother.

"I just bawled my eyes out watching the Florida shooting and thinking what if it was my kids," said a parent.

Amid much pressure and backlash for lack of response, US President Donald Trump hinted at a change in his stance on gun restrictions.

The White House said Trump is willing to discuss gun control reforms, supportive of improvements in federal background checks for prospective gun buyers.
