(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): One reason for supporting the American mission in is the difference it makes to and children, a top US senator has said.
The Afghan woman was strong, resourceful and resilient. Senator Jeanne Shaheen said while speaking at a reception at the Embassy of Afghanistan for CARE USA's Global Leaders Network in support of Afghanistan.
'The Western media has depicted the Afghan woman as a helpless and weak individual. I have said before and I shall repeat it: The Afghan woman is strong, resourceful and resilient. I think that explains it very well.'
The senator said she had a chance to see that firsthand this year when she got engaged with helping the girls robotics team come to the United States.
'One of the big reasons that I have supported our continued engagement in Afghanistan is because of the difference it has made for women and girls,' Shaheen added.
At the event, CARE USA awarded Susan Retik, Nancy Frees Fountain, Tex Fountain, and Dusty Huscher for their outstanding work on behalf of the organisation.
Afghan Ambassador Hamdullah Mohib praised the work of CARE in Afghanistan. 'Since its establishment in Afghanistan in 1961, CARE has remained committed to the country and its people. They have been consistently on the ground.'
Acknowledging that Afghanistan continued to face enormous challenges, Mohib said his country had made tremendous progress. 'Those challenges will continue to keep us awake at night sometimes and we will continue to try our best efforts.
"Today those challenges are more at par with the rest of the has and they are more in common. Afghanistan is no longer an isolated country,' he added.
Afghanistan was connected to all of its major neighbors, Central Asian republics, and , he said. 'Today we have air corridor with India. There are students studying across the world.'
Former US ambassador Ryan Crocker spoke about the incredible progress Afghanistan has made in the realm of , with over nine million students enrolled in school , at least 40 percent of them girls.
Retired Army General Carter Ham also delivered remarks, telling guests of the importance of non-military components in overcoming insecurity and achieving lasting peace and stability.
