(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) As the 108 women tee off at the Majlis Course of the Emirates Golf Clubon Wednesday, it will mark the beginning of a new era with the tournament being renamed and also boasting of a glitzy new piece of silverware.
Known as the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters on the Ladies European Tour, the 12th edition will see a new name as well as a new trophy.
The tournament has now been rebranded as the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic as part of a major overhaul.
Since its inception in 2006, the tournament was simply called the Dubai Ladies Masters until the title sponsors came on board in 2009.
And keeping with the change, the trophy has also undergone a transformation with it drawing inspiration from the iconic Dallah - the Arabian Coffee Pot trophy, that has come to symbolise the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the men's event.
The new trophy is part of a brand redesign by the organisers and that which has been beautifully crafted and expertly finished.
It is made of silver and is 62cm long. The trophy weights 3kg and has over 1,270 holes.
South Korea's In-Kyung Kim, winner here in 2009, couldn't take her eyes of the new trophy.
"I was like, Masters? No. Championship? No. Classic. When did it change?" Kim quizzed about the name change for the season finale.
And she kept gushing about the piece of silverware. "I'm just happy to be here again for the Omega Dubai Classic trophy. It's amazing. It looks more like the guys' trophy. It looks fantastic and it looks like a genie is going to come out or something. I just kept staring at it today on the first tee. Yeah, it's kind of a piece of art. It's kind of nice to see," said the world No.8, winner of the Women's British Open this season.
