Melbourne: man arrested before executing a mass shooting plot

(MENAFN) A twenty-two year old man who was claimed to have been preparing to execute a terror attack in New Year's Eve celebrations in Melbourne is now under arrest by Australian police.

The man was allegedly plotting to carry out a mass shooting using an automatic weapon at Federation Square in the city's centre, though police confirmed that the public faces no threat.

According to police, they arrested the man in Werribee, a Melbourne suburb on Monday before he was able to acquire an automatic gun and carry on with his plan.

Shane Patton, Victoria Police deputy commissioner stated on Tuesday "what we will be alleging is that he was intending to use a firearm to shoot and kill as many people as he could, this is a person who would become particularly energised, for a lack of a better word, when overseas [terrorism] events occurred and would express a great deal of interest in committing an attack himself."
