Morocco Recalls its Ambassador in Algeria for Consultations

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat - Morocco has decided to recall its Ambassador in Algiers for consultations, a communique from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday night. The move comes after the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdellah Messahel, accused Morocco of funding its investments programs in Sub-Saharan Africa with money obtained from drug-trafficking. "Following the very serious statements of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, concerning the African policy of the Kingdom of Morocco, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Algeria in Rabat was summoned tonight, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation," the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in the communique posted on its Facebook page. The top Algerian diplomat accused Moroccan banks of "laundering drug-trafficking money" in Sub-Saharan African countries. "Everybody knows that Moroccan banks launder the money obtained from trafficking. The leaders of many African countries have told me this," he claimed. The Algerian Minister went as far as accusing the Moroccan state-owned carrier, Royal Air Maroc, of transporting cannabis to Sub-Saharan Africa. These remarks were squarely denounced by Moroccan authorities, who pointed out that the Algerian Minister showed lack of knowledge regarding the Moroccan banking system and the rules of the international civil aviation. "The remarks made by the Algerian Minister on banking institutions and the national airline, testify to a deep and inexplicable ignorance of basic standards of the functioning of the banking system and civil aviation, both at national level and international," the communique"
