French ministers reaffirm their country's support to Iraq

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BAGHDAD, Aug 26, (KUNA) -- French Foreign and Defense ministers reaffirmed Saturday their country's support for Iraq in its war against terrorism.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a press conference with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim Al-Jaafari that Iraq lives now in the phase between the end of war and the beginning of reconstruction.

"While Iraqi forces are defeating so-called Islamic State (IS), the country enters the stage of reconciliation and reconstruction, it needs our support, and this is the reason behind our visit," he said.

France aims to maintain the strong partnership between the two countries, Le Drian noted.

On her part, French Defense Minister, Florence Parly congratulated Iraq on its great victory against IS in Mosul.

"The battle was long and difficult but ended for the good of Iraq, the Iraqi army will be able to win the battle against IS (Daesh) in Tal Afar. We must all work to strengthen the victories achieved by the Iraqi forces, to help on moving the country into the reconstructing phase," Parly said.

France plays an important role in the fight against terrorism and is considered one of the main partners of the US-led coalition against IS. (end) aah.nhq
