(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Islamic Relief charity organization has promised providing food aid to 1,336 destitute families in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Sunday.
Nangarhar work and social affairs director Abdul Hakim Sherzad, who launched the food distribution process at an orphanage here, said 714 families were distributed the aid.
He said the aid, including flour, ghee, sugar and seven types of food, were distributed to each family and the assistance was enough for a month.
Another 622 families of martyrs and orphans would be distributed the same goods a few days later, the official said.
A number of provincial council members were present on the occasion. They praised the Islamic Relief for assisting the poor families in the holy month of fasting and urged other charities to follow suit.
Deputy provincial council head Lal Mohammad Durrani said relief activities for poor families had lately increased in Nangarhar and the process should be expanded.
Gul Sanga, whose husband was killed in the conflict, said she was happy over receiving the aid for her orphan children.
Meanwhile, Zahir charity foundation distributed equipment in aid to nearly a dozen families to help them start small business activities.
Akmal Zahir, the foundation head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the aid included six SIM cards and credit cards, money changer boxes, sewing machines and two chicken cages.
€œOur aim is to see the countrymen stand on their own feet, we don€™t want them to become habitual of receiving food aid, we want the people to work and earn.€
He said they collected the aid from well-off people and distributed it to people after promising work.
The process of relief goods distribution has been ongoing in Nangarhar for a long period, but it is for the first time a charity has distributed work took to the destitute families.
In southeastern Paktika province, the provincial Natural Disasters Management Authority distributed food items to some 200 poor families.
Each family received five kilograms of wheat, 10 liters of ghee and one sack of rice, said Abdul Hadi, the department head.
Paktika governor Ilyas Wihdat said the aid recipients were families who had been displaced by the conflict.
He said the people of Paktika were struggling with economic issues and charity organizations should come forward to assist them.
