SHARJAH, 26th March, 2017 (WAM) -- The Emirate of Sharjah was able to save 29 megawatts of electricity and reduce 17 tonnes of carbon emissions in one hour, thanks to the response of individuals, households and businesses in the emirate to calls to observe the Earth Hour, according to the Electricity and Water Authority, SEWA.

The announcement came on the occasion of the Earth Hour, an a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to encourage individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. towards the end of March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.

Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of SEWA, said the utility is keen on co-operating with global initiatives to encourage individuals and organisations to observe the Earth Hour.

The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, in collaboration with various government agencies in Sharjah, organised a variety of activities and programmes at Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah City and Khorfakkan in the Eastern Region of Sharjah on Saturday, March 25, to mark the Earth Hour initiative and raise public awareness about the need to rationalise electricity consumption.

Held under the tagline "Shine a Light on Climate Action", the activities, which were aimed at rationalising energy consumption and raising community awareness on the importance of conserving natural resources and the environment, attracted a huge amount of community involvement.

Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, said, "Earth Hour is a global campaign through which countries and organisations contribute to saving energy and protecting natural resources by reducing carbon emissions, which affect the environment and living organisms. By organising this activity in collaboration with SEWA, we are looking forward to building a better future for the next generation by enabling them to benefit from sustainable resources."
