Young performers make it count at the PSD Got Talent


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) As the young performers gave it their best shot, a resounding wave of cheers and applause filled the gymnasium of the Philippine School Doha (PSD), buzzing with the audience rooting for their friends at the recent PSD Got Talent (PGT) event.
The first part of the event, which featured the Primary department category, saw the Primary Glee Club enchant the crowd with a heart-warming performance that saw them singing their way through the crowd the doxology (a short hymn of praises to God), followed by the playing of the Qatar and the Philippines national anthems.
While the audience, a good part of which comprised parents, encouraged the young talents with great excitement and anticipation, the high-energy singing and dancing skills of PSDians sure appeared to have surpassed their expectations.
Samia Quiogue won the People's Award, while the third place was taken by Wayne Caras, who with his powerful dance performance bagged another prize McDonald's Entertainment Award. The second place was claimed by Chrisraine Yuga who doubtlessly won many a heart with her angelic voice.
Emerging first in the competition was Yochabel Reynes with her lovely singing performance. Of course, there was also the PGT Primary department grand winner, Fretz Dones, who charmed the audience with his heart-felt vocals.
The second part of the programme took off for the Junior and Senior High School departments by the ever so talented HIYAW and HIYAW Divas who stirred up a dreamy ambience for the audience. From pulling off cool magic tricks to peppy choreographies to hitting incredible singing ranges, this session had the audience in its thrall. The acts were divided into two categories: individual and group.
Sophia Abino with her stellar singing accompanied by some neat guitar strumming took home the second place in the individual category. The first place was claimed by Raymelie Tajonera, who impressed with her especially high vocal range and a memorable performance. Bagging the championship title, McDonald's Entertainment Award and People's Choice Award was Emmanuel Balita, the first magician of PSD to leave the audience stunned with his crazy magic tricks.
The third place in the group category was taken by The Duo, who gave the audience an incredible performance with their duet act that also involved guitar playing. The second place was claimed by BMR two energetic female dancers having a go. It was Overheat that clinched the first place by filling the atmosphere with a rush of enthusiasm and energy with their eye-catching dance performance. Picking the McDonald's Entertainment Award, People's Choice Award and Championship title in the group category was The Last Minute Crew who set the stage on fire with their striking opening part, clever use of black light, and some mean choreography chops.
Dr Wilgie T Serna, the Primary department co-ordinator, who made the event possible, told Community, 'PGT has truly given an opportunity for students to showcase what they got. The students have made their fellow classmates and their teachers and parents proud.
PSD has been in the news for the many achievements of its students or alumni. Recently, making her community and country proud, Janela Joy Cuaton, the 19-year-old alumna of PSD, pulled off a thriller in the Miss Tourism Metropolitan International 2016 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to win first runner-up. A consistent achiever at PSD, Cuaton was crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas 2015.
A couple of months ago, at the 2016 DHL Express MENA Porsche Painting Competition in Bahrain that saw hundreds of young participants from all over the Middle East converge to render oil on canvas tableaus to embody the smooth vibe of the Porsche car, Kara Icasiano, a Grade 8 student of PSD, won the competition thanks to her smart design sensibilities and execution.
Last September, for the fifth time, PSD was crowned as the overall champion in the 14th Order of the Knights of Rizal (OKOR) Talents and Skills Competition. The school emerged triumphant over five other Philippine schools in the Middle East in the competition that was held in Manama, Bahrain. The OKOR, chartered under Republic Act 646, is a civic, patriotic, cultural and non-sectarian organisation in honour of the Philippine national hero, Dr Jose Rizal. PSD was established in Doha in 1992, and has 'marked a big leap in numbers from 33 students to more than 3,000 students that are currently enrolled.
