(MENAFN- AFP) World oil prices surged five percent on Wednesday, energised by the prospect of an OPEC deal to curb crude output at the cartel's gathering in Vienna.

At 1000 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in January rallied $2.22 to $47.45 per barrel. Brent North Sea crude for the same month won $2.59 to $48.97 compared with Tuesday's close.
