UAE- Help child abuse victims speak out urges official

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)Social workers can play a key role in guiding child abuse victims to overcome their past and lead a normal life a top official has said.

Mohammed Rashid Al Dhanhani Chairman of the Family Prosecution Abu Dhabi has called for a greater awareness on the vital role social workers play in severe child abuse cases be it physical sexual or mental abuse.

His remarks came during the 21st media forum held in the capital's Judicial Department under the directives of Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan Deputy Prime Minister Minister of Presidential Affairs and chairman of the judicial department.

Al Dhanhani pointed out that children who suffer from child abuse often face multiple life-threatening consequences. One of these consequences is being unable to defend themselves when the case is brought to court.

He highlighted cases when children who have been severely ill-treated by their parents are unable to defend themselves or tell the truth or are too young to acknowledge the severity of the abuse itself.

"Sometimes we see minors who are afraid to speak for themselves" Al Dhanhani said. When such cases are brought to the attention of the court experts are brought in to monitor the child's wellbeing.

These social workers are used to assisting the minor allowing him or her to shed light on what has really occurred as well as adding a sense of security safety and reassurance.

Al Dhanhani recalled instances of startling child abuses which took place due to parents who lack education empathy and patience.

"There was a case where a young child was severely beaten up with a weapon simply because he would wet his bed" Al Dhanhani said.

"This is a five-year-old child how can any parent teach their child about bed wetting through beating him up and abusing him?"

Unfortunately such cases exist and this is where social workers become vital Al Dhanhani added.

They could help the victim overcome the difficult phase of life.

Al Dhanhani noted that social workers working for the court play a crucial role in fighting extreme child abuse cases in Abu Dhabi.

For instance this year alone 260 cases were taken care of by social workers. They file a report on the young victim which is then handed over to the family prosecution of the court for a final decision the case.
