Sheikh Salman Urges 'Arab Media' To Cope With Rapid IT Developments

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Al- Sabah has called on the Arab media outlets to keep abreast of the latest developments in the information technology. The Arab media outlets have to use new media tools to create a constructive human dialogue to spread knowledge and enhance security and stability in the region, Sheikh Salman said in a speech, read out on his behalf by Assistant Undersecretary for External Media Sector and the Information Ministry Faisal Al-Mutallaqem, at a media symposium held Monday.
Sheikh Salman also emphasised the important role of national Arab media in immunizing societies, especially youth, against the extremist ideologies and terrorism. He proposed adopting youth's issues and initiatives and developing them into a tolerant cultural framework. He said that the massive and rapid leaps in the communication and media technological tools have imposed a real challenge to conventional media. He pointed out that the new media tools, especially the social networking sites, are steadily growing worldwide. Unfortunately, some people use these media tools to propogate crimes and terrorism, he cautioned. Sheikh Salman suggested that Kuwait was leading in including new media tools in its media system, through the establishing of a new media department at the Ministry of Information.

The Ministry of State for Youth Affairs is also organizing training courses for youth about the new media. He stated that Kuwait is the fifth biggest Arab country in terms of the number of social networking sites users, nearly 2.4 million. The two-symposium, themed "Arab media in digital information world," is patronized by the Kuwaiti Information Minister and held on the sidelines of the Asilah Cultural Festival 2015. Meanwhile, a senior official at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information on Tuesday said that Kuwait is a digital media pioneer on the Arab level. Talking to KUNA on the sidelines of a digital media forum held in Asilah, northern Morocco, Assistant Undersecretary for External Media and the Information Ministry Faisal Al Mutallaqem, emphasized media freedom in Kuwait promoting the society.

Al-Mutallaqem is attending the two-day forum on the Arab digital media at the age of information technology, held on the sidelines of the Asilah Cultural Festival 2015, on behalf of Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al- Humoud Al-Sabah. He underlined the great attention paid by the ministry and Sheikh Salman to digital media, manifested in multimedia and IT initiatives and training and cultural courses organized for Kuwaiti youth and civil society organizations, as part of an ambitious plan of the international media sector at the ministry, Mutallaqem noted. According to the senior media official, up to 2.4 million people in Kuwait are using the Internet and social networking.
