Qaradawi calls on Egypt to stop wall along Gaza border

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) "I wonder how the unarmed people of Gaza can pose a threat to the security of Egypt," said renowned Qatar-based Islamic scholar, Dr Yusuf Al Qaradawi (pictured) while calling on Egypt to stop construction of the controversial steel wall along its borders with Gaza. "We have been criticising Israel for constructing a wall around Israeli settlements. Now we are doing the same thing. We are in fact competing with Israel by deciding to construct a steel wall," Qaradawi said, in his Friday sermon at the Omar bin Khatab mosque. He hoped that wisdom would return to the rulers of Egypt and they would abstain from this move that amounts to a "premeditated act of crime." "It is a pity millions of pounds have been pumped to construct this wall while unemployment remains very high in Egypt and a number of people are struggling hard to find their daily meals," said the scholar. He said by constructing the wall, Egypt would be undermining its mediatory role between the Palestinian factions, by putting itself against one of these groups. "I pray Allah to show the right path to the Egyptian authorities. I hope they would correct their stance and do what every sensible Arab or Muslim would do," he added.
