2018 Spartan World Championship Powered by Rakuten Drew the Best Endurance Athletes in the World to North Lake Tahoe, CA

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif., Oct. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2018 Spartan World Championship powered by Rakuten brought more than 15,000 athletes and spectators to Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows in North Lake Tahoe, CA for three days of competition and events. Hosted by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, Obstacle Racing's (OCR) premier weekend featured three championship races that drew the world's best endurance athletes from more than 50 countries.

Highlights from the World Championship weekend included:

Members of Team USA and Team Canada climb the Slip Wall at the 2018 Spartan Team World Championship in North Lake Tahoe, CA

Spartan World Championship Powered by Rakuten – With $125,000 in cash prizes on the line, some of the best endurance athletes from more than 50 countries battled a 13.5-mile "Spartan Beast" course with 34 obstacles and elevation reaching more than 4,000 feet. In the end, the United Kingdom's Jon Albon (2:07:04) and Canada's Lindsay Webster (2:25:27) took home the men's and women's titles respectively. Click HERE for images and see below for full results.

Spartan – Albon or Webster have the opportunity to take home $1 million dollars if the can replicate 1st place finishes at both the Spartan Trifecta World Championship in Sparta, Greece November 2-4 and the 24-hour Ultra World Championship in Iceland December 8-9.

Spartan Team World Championship – Men's and Women's teams of three from more than 20 countries took on the 9.5-mile, 28 obstacle, "Spartan Super" course for a piece of the $10,000 prize purse and national pride. Canada dominated the race with the country's top men's and women's teams taking home the gold – leaving the U.S. trailing behind. Click HERE for images and see below for full results.

Spartan World Championship Ultra – The final race of the weekend saw competitors facing a 32-mile, 68 obstacle "Spartan Ultra" race course. Canada once again took top billing with Adam Lister (5:54:13) winning for the men and Mexico's Alex Roudayna (7:29:58) placing first in the women's race. Spartan: The Championship Series on ESPN – The Spartan World Championship Powered by Rakuten and Team World Championship will be featured in upcoming episodes of "Spartan: The Championship Series" on ESPN later in the year.

Spartan x Rakuten Finisher Kit Unveiling – At a press conference to kick-off the weekend's events on Friday afternoon, Rakuten Marketing CEO Stuart Simms joined Spartan Founder and CEO Joe De Sena on-stage, to unveil the 2019 Spartan finisher's kit. which features the Rakuten logo on the front and back as part of the brands' partnership that was announced earlier in the month. Locked and Loaded 24 Hours (LL24H) – The 24-hour Isolation Challenge in support of mental health, veterans, and first responders saw four endurance athletes stepping inside a shipping container where they ran on TrueForm Runners in an environment deprived of light and sound. Retired United States Marine, Major Brian Chontosh (aka "Tosh"); 3-times Ironman, John Witzing; and one of Canada's top personal trainers, Josh Chessman, stepped into individual containers along with a last-minute addition of elite Spartan athlete Isiah Vidal – all completing the 24-hour mission.
