'Give Opportunity For Surrender': UP Minister Sanjay Nishad Opposes Police Encounters
Reacting to the murder of a hotelier's son in Ghazipur district, he said: "The truth will be known after the investigation. I am with the victim's family in whatever their demand is. I have always stood with society and will continue to do so."
"I would urge the Chief Minister to carry out a thorough investigation and punish the culprits," Nishad told IANS.
Vineet Rai, the son of hotelier Ajay Rai, was shot dead by four masked men in the Kotwali police station area of Ghazipur. During an earlier interaction with IANS, the victim's father had blamed police inaction against an alleged extortion racket for the incident, alleging that members of the police force are in "nexus" with the gang members. He demanded an encounter and bulldozer action against the accused.
Meanwhile, Nishad stressed that every citizen of the country has the right to speak and seek justice and respect.
"Definitely, an investigation should be conducted, and it is our responsibility to look into it," he said.
Opposing the deaths of accused in police action, Nishad said: "Criminals do not have any caste, but it is wrong if the police start carrying out the work of the courts."
The Minister's response came after the key accused in the Ghazipur murder case was reportedly killed in a police encounter on Wednesday night. Previously, the main accused in the case involving the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan in the Khoda police station area of Ghaziabad was also shot dead in a police encounter.
Nishad asserted that criminals should definitely be punished, but "after the proceedings in the court".
"If someone is accused of a crime, the person should be given an opportunity to surrender. They can surrender in court."
"But if the police stand in front of the court, then how will the accused surrender?" he asked.
"Let the accused surrender, then take him into remand. Interrogation can be done after that, according to the law."
