Drone Strike Damages Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

(MENAFN) A Ukrainian military drone targeted the turbine hall of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, leading to an explosion that harmed the building, according to Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, on Saturday.

The attack left a breach in the wall of the turbine hall, though the plant’s essential machinery remained intact, Rosatom confirmed in its statement.

The drone was directed through a fiber-optic guidance system, the statement emphasized, eliminating any chance of an unintended strike.

Commenting on the event, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev characterized it as "the first deliberate attack on key nuclear power plant equipment resulting in structural damage to a turbine hall building."

He further remarked: "It is noteworthy that the drone was fiber-optic controlled. This completely rules out the possibility of an accidental hit."

Likhachev added: "The Ukrainian armed forces time and again cross not just red lines, but the boundaries of common sense. What to expect next? Strikes directly on the turbine? The reactor hall? The reactor and safety systems?"

He cautioned that repeated assaults on nuclear sites are pushing the region closer to a potentially grave nuclear disaster.
