Sweden Condemns Israeli Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Activists as “Indefensible”
(MENAFN) Sweden has strongly criticized the treatment of activists detained from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, describing the actions of Israeli Cabinet Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir as “indefensible,” according to reports.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said in a public statement that the conduct shown toward detained flotilla members violated basic standards of dignity and acceptable treatment of detainees.
She added that the incident reinforces Sweden’s position in favor of sanctions listings against certain Israeli officials, including those described as extremist ministers.
Stenergard emphasized that all detained individuals must be treated with respect and that their rights must be protected, noting she had previously raised concerns directly with her Israeli counterpart regarding detainee safety and legal safeguards.
The comments followed the interception of the Global Sumud flotilla, which organizers said included 50 vessels attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip when they were seized by Israeli forces in international waters.
The incident has triggered widespread international criticism amid ongoing debate over maritime enforcement actions and treatment of detainees, according to reports.
