US Senators Criticize Israeli Minister Over Treatment of Gaza Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) United States lawmakers have condemned the conduct of Itamar Ben-Gvir after a video circulated showing him appearing to taunt detained Gaza-bound aid activists, according to reports.

US Senator Jeff Merkley described the treatment of the detainees as “disgusting and inhumane,” adding that images of destruction and humanitarian suffering in Gaza help explain why individuals feel compelled to take action.

Another senator, Chris Van Hollen, also criticized the incident, arguing that Ben-Gvir should have already faced sanctions and describing the behavior as unacceptable. He further suggested that such conduct raises broader concerns about how detainees are treated beyond public view.

The criticism followed the release of a video posted by Ben-Gvir showing detained pro-Palestinian activists, who were reportedly bound and forced to kneel after being intercepted while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid by sea.

The incident is linked to the interception of a flotilla organized to reach Gaza, which activists say was intended to challenge the long-standing blockade on the territory, according to reports.

The broader context includes ongoing disputes over maritime aid missions to Gaza and repeated confrontations involving vessels attempting to deliver humanitarian supplies, many of which have been intercepted in recent operations.
