Deadly Shooting at San Diego Islamic Center Leaves Five Dead
(MENAFN) Five people were killed Monday during a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, including two individuals believed to be responsible for the attack, according to law enforcement officials.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said during a news conference that authorities had confirmed the deaths of three adult male victims, while the two suspected shooters were also killed during the incident.
“What we know at this time is that there are three deceased adult males,” Wahl said, according to reports.
He added that one of the victims worked as a security guard at the Islamic center.
Authorities said they are treating the case as a possible hate crime because of the location of the attack. “Because of the Islamic center location, we are considering this a hate crime until it's not, and at this point we're going to work closely with the FBI to make sure that we are matching all the resources that we need for this investigation,” Wahl said.
The police chief also confirmed that all children present at the center, which includes an on-site school, were unharmed and safe.
Earlier in the day, police responded to reports of an active shooter situation at the Islamic center in San Diego’s Clairemont area near the 7000 block of Eckstrom Avenue. Authorities later announced that the threat had been “neutralized,” according to reports.
US President Donald Trump described the incident as a “terrible situation.”
