Iran Establishes New Authority to Oversee Hormuz Amid US Tensions
(MENAFN) Iran has moved to set up a new institutional framework aimed at supervising activity in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions continue to escalate with the United States over the strategically vital maritime passage.
According to reports, the newly created body is expected to deliver “immediate updates regarding Strait of Hormuz operations and the latest developments,” as shared through a post on X by Iranian security authorities. However, no further clarification has been provided about how the entity will be organized or what specific authorities it will hold.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most critical energy transit points globally, serving as the main link between the Gulf region, the Gulf of Oman, and international shipping routes.
Any disruption in the area has long raised concerns over potential impacts on global supplies of oil, fuel, and natural gas, especially amid ongoing regional tensions.
Separately, according to reports, Ebrahim Azizi, who heads the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, stated on Saturday that Tehran has developed a system to manage maritime traffic through a designated route in the Strait of Hormuz. He also noted that fees will be collected “for the specialized services” provided under this arrangement.
