Rubio Calls for Change in Cuba’s Leadership as US Reiterates USD100M Aid Offer

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Cuba’s current leadership should be replaced, as Washington continues to offer $100 million in humanitarian assistance tied to cooperation from Havana, according to reports.

The remarks come amid a worsening economic situation on the island, where widespread power shortages have left a large portion of the country without electricity. Cuban authorities have attributed the crisis to external pressure and sanctions, while US officials argue that structural issues within Cuba’s political and economic system are the primary cause.

Speaking during recent comments, Rubio sharply criticized the Cuban system, saying, “It's a broken, nonfunctional economy, and it's impossible to change it. I wish it were different,” according to reports.

He further suggested that limited engagement would continue, adding, “We'll give them a chance. But I don't think it's going to happen,” and “I don't think we're going to be able to change the trajectory of Cuba as long as these people are in charge in that regime.”

US officials have renewed an offer of $100 million in aid intended to support humanitarian needs on the island, though they argue that its delivery depends on Cuban cooperation. Washington has also accused Havana of obstructing the distribution of assistance.

In an official statement cited by reports, US authorities said, “The regime refuses to allow the United States to provide this assistance to the Cuban people, who are in desperate need of assistance due to the failures of Cuba's corrupt regime.” They added that responsibility for accepting or rejecting the aid ultimately rests with the Cuban government.

The aid proposal comes alongside heightened political tensions, with US policymakers continuing to push for broader changes in Cuba’s governance while Havana maintains that external sanctions are driving the country’s current crisis.
