Major Russia–Ukraine Prisoner Swap Sees Almost Over Two Hundred Soldiers Returned
(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have carried out a prisoner exchange involving 205 detainees on each side, according to reports from Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that the released servicemen are currently in Belarus, where they are receiving medical care and psychological support. They are expected to be transferred onward to Russia for continued treatment and rehabilitation.
According to reports, the exchange was facilitated with the involvement of the United Arab Emirates, which has previously participated in mediating similar agreements between the two sides.
Reports also indicated that remains of deceased military personnel were included in the exchange process. In this aspect, one side transferred a significantly higher number of bodies, with figures reported as 526 compared to 41.
Ukraine confirmed that the exchange took place, describing it as the initial phase of a broader planned “1,000 for 1,000” prisoner swap framework. This larger arrangement was previously mentioned in connection with US-mediated efforts tied to a temporary ceasefire initiative around Russia’s Victory Day period.
Ukrainian officials said those released include personnel from multiple branches of the armed forces, including the army, navy, air force, territorial defense units, national guard, and border services.
They also noted that nearly all of the returned individuals had been in captivity for approximately four years, with a large proportion captured during the 2022 fighting in Mariupol.
According to reports, prisoner and body exchanges between the two countries have occurred regularly, with the most recent prior swap taking place in late April, when each side released 193 detainees.
