UAE Confirms Safety After Drone Strike Near Barakah Plant
(MENAFN) The United Arab Emirates’ nuclear regulator confirmed on Sunday that no radioactive material was released following a drone strike near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, stressing that the incident did not pose any danger to the public or the environment.
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) stated that the event had no impact on the plant’s operational safety or the readiness of its critical systems.
“There has been no release of radioactive material, radiological safety levels remain within normal ranges, and there is no risk to the public or the environment,” the authority said, adding that no injuries were reported.
The announcement came shortly after the Abu Dhabi Media Office reported that emergency teams dealt with a fire at an external electrical generator located outside the facility’s inner perimeter in the Al Dhafra region. The office said the fire was caused by a drone strike but did not identify its origin, noting that precautionary measures were implemented and no casualties occurred.
The broader regional context remains tense following a series of escalations that began with US and Israeli strikes against Iran in February. Iran later responded with attacks targeting Israel and several US allies in the Gulf, including the UAE, alongside disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was introduced on April 8 through Pakistani mediation efforts, although subsequent negotiations in Islamabad failed to secure a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.
