Union Strike Halts Long Island Rail Road Across New York Area
(MENAFN) North America’s largest commuter rail network, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), came to a halt early Saturday after five unions representing close to half of its employees initiated a strike across the New York City metropolitan area, according to reports.
As stated by reports, the action followed extended months of stalled negotiations over pay and healthcare contributions, even after mediation attempts involving the administration of Donald Trump.
Union representatives indicated that no further discussions had been arranged at the time of the shutdown.
“We’re far apart at this point,” Kevin Sexton, national vice president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, said. “We are truly sorry that we are in this situation.”
On the other side, the leadership of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) claimed the unions had intended to proceed with the strike regardless of concessions made during talks, insisting the agency had already met their key demands, particularly on wages.
The disruption is projected to affect around 250,000 daily passengers who rely on travel between Long Island and New York City, with additional knock-on effects expected for weekend attendance at major sporting events involving the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and New York Knicks.
