Rosatom Says Ukrainian Drone Strikes Targeted Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant Area
(MENAFN) The head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out repeated drone attacks near the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant this week, resulting in injuries and damage to infrastructure in the surrounding area, according to reports.
Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev said that one drone struck a pipeline located near the plant’s reactor units, though it did not detonate and instead crashed close to one of the facility’s main power sections.
According to reports, another attack earlier in the week involved a drone strike on a vehicle carrying two plant employees. The incident occurred near the facility perimeter, and both individuals sustained injuries ranging from moderate to severe.
Likhachev stated that emergency response efforts were hindered for a period due to ongoing drone activity in the area, which he said delayed medical evacuation operations and complicated rescue efforts.
He also claimed that workers at the facility continued performing their duties during the incidents, despite the heightened security risks around the site.
According to reports, the plant has been operating under strained conditions, relying on a single external power line for an extended period, along with intermittent outages that have required backup generators to maintain essential systems.
Rosatom further criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency, accusing it of insufficient response to ongoing security risks at the facility. The organization said it plans to raise the issue during upcoming consultations with the agency.
According to reports, Moscow intends to address the situation at the plant in scheduled discussions with international nuclear safety officials, as concerns continue over the stability and security of operations in the region amid the ongoing conflict.
