Aid Convoy Continues Journey Toward Gaza After Libya Inspection Stop

(MENAFN) The Gaza-bound aid convoy known as Sumud resumed its trip after a temporary stop in the northwestern Libyan city of Zliten, where security authorities carried out inspections related to participants traveling with the mission.

The convoy, which aims to challenge the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, had departed Friday from the Libyan city of Zawiya before pausing for passport checks that reportedly lasted around five and a half hours.

Organizers said the land mission, affiliated with the Global Steadfastness Flotilla, is transporting 50 containers intended for humanitarian relief in Gaza. The shipment includes 30 containers carrying aid supplies, 20 mobile housing units and five ambulances.

More than 350 activists from 30 countries are participating in the convoy, including representatives from Türkiye, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Indonesia, China, the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom, among others.

Separately, the Global Sumud Flotilla launched a maritime mission on Thursday, with 54 vessels departing from the Marmaris area in southwestern Türkiye in another effort to challenge the blockade on Gaza.

Reports also recalled that in late April, Israeli forces carried out an operation in international waters near the coast of Crete targeting flotilla vessels carrying 345 participants from 39 countries, including Turkish nationals.

According to reports, Israeli authorities detained 21 boats carrying around 175 activists, while other vessels continued sailing toward Greek territorial waters.

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007, affecting roughly 2.4 million residents in the territory.

Reports added that Israel’s military campaign launched in October 2023 has resulted in more than 72,000 deaths, over 172,000 injuries and widespread destruction throughout Gaza.
