Latvian Prime Minister Steps Down After Coalition Government Collapse
(MENAFN) According to reports, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has announced her resignation following the breakdown of the country’s three-party coalition government.
The development came shortly after the Progressive Party urged President Edgars Rinkēvičs to initiate discussions on forming a new government, arguing that the cabinet led by Siliņa had effectively lost its ability to govern. The party stated that the situation had narrowed the path forward to either the prime minister stepping down or facing a parliamentary vote of confidence.
After meeting with the Progressives on Wednesday, Siliņa indicated that she had suggested continuing cooperation within the coalition. However, the Progressives maintained that the New Unity-led alliance no longer had their backing.
The Union of Greens and Farmers also said that the Progressives’ withdrawal of support had effectively collapsed the government, adding that the formation of a new administration would be in the national interest.
Tensions between Siliņa’s New Unity party and the Progressives had been building after the prime minister dismissed Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, who represents the Progressive Party, last Sunday. The dismissal followed recent drone incidents in eastern Latvia, where two foreign unmanned aerial vehicles crashed into an oil storage site and caused damage to an empty fuel tank.
